Plans were in place for Korean sextet (G)I-DLE to embark on their first world tour “Who Am I: I-LAND”, kicking off the tour with the Bangkok show in April.
The tour, slated to make stops in Asia, Europe and the United States, was subsequently called off as the pandemic swept the world.
But fans of the girl group, collectively known as NEVERLAND, were not neglected. A ticketed virtual show was announced as a replacement.
The concert, held online last Sunday, was streamed live from a studio, unlike other performances where (G)I-DLE perform in front of roaring fans.
Fan-favourites were plastered throughout the set, from their iconic debut song “Latata” to the group’s latest offering “Oh My God”.
“Since it is our first concert, it was hard to choose what songs we should perform,” confessed leader Soyeon. She also added that this is even more a challenge since most of their songs are composed and written by members.
Ever since their debut in 2019, (G)I-DLE have been performing as a whole. Members have not stepped up as individual acts, so instances where members perform individually are naturally few and far between.
Their attempt to boast their individuality was evident, as each member got their individual airtime to perform a song or two.
The group’s vocal line, composed of Minnie, Yuqi and Miyeon, boast their vocal prowess with Rihanna’s “What Now” and P!nk’s “What About Us”. They came together as a sub-unit for a refreshing take on Rihanna’s “Kiss It Better”.
“This is the only song the three of us practiced together during our trainee days,” Yuqi told fans.
While Shuhua performed an elegant dance routine to go along a traditional oriental tune, Soojin did modern choreography. Soyeon rapped in full English, to David Guetta’s “Hey Mama”.
Well, having their milestone event hit by a pandemic is not the most ideal. But look on the brighter side. More fans were able to enjoy the broadcast than just those who saw them in-person.
