SINGAPORE – The largest Hallyu festival in the region was held in Singapore for one weekend only from last Saturday (25 May) to Sunday (26 May).
From up-and-coming acts like A.C.E, GWSN, Trei, Kanto and VERIVERY who performed at the afternoon showcases to a glamorous red carpet session followed by artiste engagements and an evening concert, the festival was no less a blast for fans.
The evening concert, held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, lasted 150 minutes on each day and saw many mega acts like SUPER JUNIOR, MONSTA X, WINNER and more.
This year’s edition of the evening concert once again boasts a full Korean production team thus explaining the resplendent visual effects like pyrotechnics, confetti and flames that could be seen throughout the show.
N.FLYING and Oh My Girl kicked off the concert before the NU’EST came up on stage, attracting deafening screams. Member Hwang Min-hyun finally came back to NU’EST after his activities with the now-defunct WANNA ONE. Born in Los Angeles, fellow member Aron also greeted fans in fluent English.
For that tinge of female charisma we are missing out on thus far, Hyolyn is here to fill the gap up for us. She not only brought to fans her solo tracks like Paradise and See Sea, but her set included tracks from SISTAR, like Shake It and she gave an EDM touch to Ma Boy, bringing out a sense of nostalgia.
And for the one and only WINNER we were waiting for, the boys dished out Love Me Love Me, their debut song Empty and their newest release Ah Yeah. The stage’s their playground as the boys partied it all out. The experienced quartet then told fans that “they are one in a million”, and fans got their hint. Wrapping their set up with Really Really, WINNER showed us what the ideal performance you should not be missing out looks like.
The evening concert on the second day saw (G)I-DLE opening the stage with Senorita and Maze. “It is an honour for us to be here, and since we have prepared hard for the stages, please enjoy” said the group’s leader So-yeon humbly. They did not fail to take our breaths away, by ending their set with their title tracks Hann (Alone) and Latata.
KARD was up next. Known for their unique music styles, they have gained much popularity and attention stateside, but this is the case in Singapore as well too. Fans grooved to their catchy Oh Nana, Don’t Recall and You in Me. “I’m receiving so much energy from you guys (fans)” said J.Seph in perfect and articulated English. He even did a acrobatic somersault on stage in the middle of the performance. How can we miss out their recent release Bomb Bomb? The stage was once again ablaze to complement their heart-thumping performance.
Did you know? Member Hong-seok from PENTAGON shared that he once studied in Singapore for 4 years. Could this be why his English sounded somewhat similar to us? The group also performed Sha La La before riding the rhythm on Violet. Without a doubt, they showed us their signature dance move with SHINE.
We’ve got a hint that there might be some skin exposure during the stage of MONSTA X during the red carpet session, and indeed, member Wonho was generous enough to give fans a peek as he donned on a see-through costume. They did not hold back on their overwhelming charisma, going strong at the start with Jealousy, Play It Cool to Dramarama.
Of course, the last act of the night was something fans should not miss. The legends have made their way back to Singapore to perform one-night only. Cue the introduction video, and fans can be seen turning on their sapphire lightsticks all ready to go all out for the one and only Super Junior.
Starting their performance with the our favourite earworm SORRY SORRY, to a rearranged rendition of Bonamana, fans were cheering for them all the way.
They greeted fans with their signature introduction greeting, which is humorous when looked at one perspective but so familiar and near to our hearts when looked at from another. While the members introduced themselves in English, Dong-hae was the only one who used Chinese to talk to fans. “It’s been 2 years since we last came to Singapore for Super Show 7, and we’ve missed you”, he said.
Call the members of Super Junior a cheer magnet, as they attracted the loudest screams and cheers from their ELFs. Yesung and Ryeowook did a solo performance as well, bringing It has to be you and Drunk in the morning respectively after the group took it a notch down with the emotional ballad One More Chance.
As their performance comes to a close, the band’s leader Leeteuk hints at the arrival of the group’s comeback later the year as they slowly trod into their 15th anniversary for the group.
This year’s HallyuPopFest brought fans together because of something known as K-pop and this culture of Korean music will definitely not fade off just yet, so be sure to look out for more updates from HallyuPopFest!
